Message from the Master

Friends and Brothers,

Thank you to everyone who attended our June sauna lodge Stated Communication. The air conditioning was out for the evening, but we had a great time anyway. In fact, given the positive reception, I’m considering holding another one. Shall we keep the A/C off for our next Stated? It should be even warmer in July.

Jokes aside, it reminded me that we have something unique going on at KMW. Somehow, despite all we have been through over the past year and a half, we are coming out of Covid 19 stronger than ever. The energy and excitement are palpable. You have certainly inspired me with it. Our events are well-attended, we are making fraternal visits, and are on track to win the Hillman award again this year. But it goes deeper than ticking the boxes. Our brothers want to engage, they want to do more, and they want to find ways to make more of their Masonic experience.

A lodge is only as strong as the time we put into it, and time is a precious resource. How will we choose to invest it? Masonry can be more than showing up at the lodge, visiting the pub, and stopping by the occasional ritual school. It is a shared experience. Earlier this month we had 25 Masons from five different lodges shoot some pool together. Last year 50 of us put on a Robert Burns table lodge, resplendent with kilts, Highlanders, music, and haggis. Through the pandemic, we held weekly, well-attended Zoom presentations with a host of excellent speakers. We can do this because enough brothers choose to make our fraternity stronger through their time investment.

So what do you want out of your Masonic experience? What time are you willing to invest? What do you want to do? We can make it happen. All it takes is that initial investment. You don’t need to shoulder the whole burden alone, either. That’s what we’re all here for- to help make these experiences fun, easy, and meaningful.

Best wishes to you all,

Christopher Kelly

Message from the Master

To the Members of Kemper-Macon Ware Lodge No. 64,

I’d like to personally thank everyone who came out to our May Stated. We shared a home cooked meal provided by Worshipful Van Winkle and Brother Thomas. Right Worshipful Don Strehle gave an excellent presentation on the importance of a growth mindset. It was incredibly motivating to me and is a regular topic of conversation among those in attendance.

Now that we’re getting back into the swing of things, we’ve got a number of activities planned. We will make fraternal visits to Cherrydale-Columbia, Arlington Centennial Glebe, and Andrew Jackson Lodges over the next month; our LIW program is picking up steam; and we are scheduling a billiards evening at Revolution Billiards in Fairfax. If you are interested in any of these, please let me know! Dates are below.

Dues and donations can now be sent via PayPal! To send in your dues or donations, log into paypal.com and click on <Send> near the top of the page. Enter the email KemperMaconWare64@gmail.com and then <Next>. Enter the amount and click <Continue>. You can now review the details of the transaction and click <Send payment now> to finish.

Finally, we are continuing to build our website (kmw64.org) and online presence. Our Junior Warden, Josh Farrar, is leading the charge. Please join us on Facebook for regular updates. We welcome any and all input. Finding ways of connecting with our community, both locally and digitally, is critical to sustaining our growth.

Best wishes to you all,

To the Members of Kemper-Macon Ware Lodge No. 64,

I’d like to personally thank everyone who came out to our April Stated. We had thirty in attendance, including five prospects. We shared a homecooked meal provided by Worshipful Van Winkle and Brother Thomas. Worshipful Loudermilk gave an excellent presentation on the importance of Masonic ritual. I believe I speak for everyone when I say it was fantastic to get back into lodge with my brothers. This is just the first step, with many more to come.

For our May 11th Stated Communication we’ll have a home cooked pot roast dinner followed by an open presentation by Right Worshipful Don Strehle, our Grand Senior Warden. We will also vote on a petition to receive the degrees in Freemasonry. Mark it on your calendars!

Now that we’re back in business, there will be a few changes to our monthly schedule. The usual Tuesday Zoom presentations will be pared back to two a month, with the other Tuesdays reserved for our Lodge Instruction of Work ritual school. Please see below for details. Message from the Master

To the Members of Kemper-Macon Ware Lodge No. 64,

Our Tuesday Zoom series continues apace. I would like to thank Right Worshipful David Potts, Worshipful Kinne Sutton, Worshipful Daniel Froggett, and Right Worshipful Roger Peak for contributing excellent presentations. We also had a great joint presentation with Henry Knox Field-John Blair and Henry Lodges after we closed our first in-person Stated of the year. Please join us on Zoom at 7:00 on Tuesdays whenever you can. It is always a fun hour. See the Upcoming Events section for the schedule.

A big thank you to the brothers that have been showing up on Saturday to help clean out the lodge, with a special acknowledgement to Brothers Kevin Thomas and Juver Quintanilla and Worshipfuls Troy Van Winkle and Ray Kasey. We emptied, scrubbed, and reorganized the pantry, kitchen, and shed over the last several weekends. Mary Strehle and Ray Gan of Unity Chapter No. 201 also joined in the festivities. I’m looking forward to working closely with Unity on some fun events later this year. Next up is updating the kitchen, sprucing up the fellowship hall, deep cleaning the bathrooms and stairwell, and getting ready for landscaping!

We had five prospects reach out to the lodge over the past several months, including several that have donated their time on Saturdays. Making new Masons is essential to building on our foundation, and we’re excited to see so much interest in the lodge, despite the virus. Please join me in connecting with them and spreading the good word about KMW.

Christopher Kelly

The dues are $95.00. We are trying to earn the Morlock Award again this year, so we need 34 members to contribute. The Morlock Award is a $5.00 contribution by 20% of the membership. Message from the Master

To the Members of Kemper-Macon Ware Lodge No. 64,

Our Tuesday Zoom meeting series has been a roaring success. We’ve had excellent presentations by W. Jim Loudermilk, R.W. Roger Peak, W. Troy Van Winkle, W. John Smith, and myself. We will continue to hold a Zoom each Tuesday at 1900.

We have a library! The downstairs room to the left of the entrance was emptied, scrubbed, and reorganized into a library, reading, and meeting space. There are a large number of histories, works of fiction and non-fiction, and a trove of short talk presentations available to any brother. A big thank you to the brothers that have been showing up on Saturday to help clean out the lodge.

We have a website! We have begun posting info on our website, kmw64.org. There are more features coming soon, but for now we are maintaining the Trestleboard/Announcements page. At some point in the near future we will also maintain the calendar, where all upcoming events will be announced. In the meantime, please feel free to explore.

Peace be with you,

Christopher Kelly

Message from the Master

To the Members of Kemper-Macon Ware Lodge No. 64,

Several years ago, having recently attended a one-day conferral, I was in search of guidance. It was my intent to return the catechisms and I needed an instructor. So, one rainy evening at Cherrydale Columbia Lodge, Worshipful Edward Jones, my sponsor and first Worshipful Master, introduced me to Worshipful Troy Van Winkle. Troy invited me to the KMW ritual school and became my mentor. I petitioned Kemper-Macon Ware for membership because of the vibrant community and fellowship I found. And you welcomed me with open arms. Over the past several years it’s become more than just a community. You are my friends and my brothers. And now it is my privilege to be part of our bright future. Please accept my sincere appreciation for the trust you have placed in me.

We have five keen line officers preparing to take the East for the next five years. It is truly a blessing that all of our officers are so dedicated to the craft and the lodge. Each of them will bring something new, and each of them will leave the lodge stronger than they found it.

Worshipful Van Winkle put us on the path to Becoming the Example, and I look forward to working with all of you to keep reaching higher and dreaming bigger, to Build on the Foundation, and to pursue that greater light in Masonry.

Peace be with you,

Christopher Kelly

Message from W. Troy Van Winkle

My Brethren,

In 2017, my first year as Master, the theme was ‘Love in Light’. It alluded to the work that we would begin and the bonds that were solidified in the quarries. We learned to trust each other, we stopped holding each other at arm’s length, we were Brothers, but we became friends. In that newfound trust, we all started to learn more, growing the Light. In 2018, the theme was ‘Hillman or Bust!’ Well, after what we started in 2017, we hit the ground running, Fraternal visits were knocked out by mid-February, we had presentations in other Lodges, 7 Catechism returns, 6 affiliations, and were getting even stronger in Ritual. We were awarded with the Hillman for the first time since 2002. In 2019, Worshipful Eric McElwain took over, and he wanted to continue the programs that we had in place. Two…consecutive…Hillman’s….and then came the Levy and Stokes Awards, now two consecutive years. In 2020, the theme was consistency, keeping down the same path that we were headed, and further entrenching the soul of the Lodge. ‘Becoming the example’ was the theme. When we welcome brethren from any Masonic jurisdiction, they will witness the example of Virginia Freemasonry within our Lodge.

2020 has been unlike any other. Due to the horrific pandemic of 2020, the Grand Master had to close down all Lodges holden under the Grand lodge of Virginia. April to August we did not hold business meetings, we did not meet socially without the proper PPE’s. This pandemic has led to the downfall of many Lodges around the State of Virginia, but somehow, KMW has still gotten stronger. It’s because of those bonds that we grew from 2017 til this very moment. I love ‘Our Guys’. But how did we do it? We had several individual advancements and certifications. We’ve had each of our Officers working together to make this Lodge operate efficiently. We have multiple members actively mentoring and instructing newer Masons. Two of our members hold District 1A offices. At the One-Day conferrals in October and November, our members outshined the best of the best Ritualists in the District. And most importantly, we made a Mason that day who was raised by our next Worshipful Master.

I sincerely thank each and every one of you for your support and contributions along the way. I look forward to being part of the future of this Lodge. We’re not done yet!

W. Christopher Kelly’s Biography

Christopher Kelly was born and raised in Clemson, South Carolina. He roamed the countryside, learned to work with his hands, and was an active Boy Scout. For high school, he attended Christ School in Asheville, North Carolina. He split his undergraduate years between Clemson University; the University of Limerick, Ireland; and finished at American University with a BA in Theatre in 2007. After graduating, he spent two years teaching theatre, design, and Shakespeare at the Academy of the Holy Cross in Maryland. Overall, he spent a decade working as a lighting designer, carpenter, and technical director in the DC theatre community. In 2011, he moved back to Clemson and received his MA in Economics, publishing a thesis on the effect of corruption on national productivity levels. Moving back to the DC metro area in 2015, he has spent the last five years working as a project manager for non-profit and government entities.

In August of 2018 Christopher was raised a Master Mason at Sharon Lodge, via a One Day Conferral, having been sponsored by W. Edward Brooks Jones and W. Joseph Carico Blue III. In December that year, he was installed as Senior Deacon. 2019 saw him join both Kemper -Macon Ware and Concord lodges. Christopher returned all three of his catechisms in 2019 at both Sharon and Kemper-Macon Ware. For the 2020 Masonic year, he was installed as Jr. Warden of Sharon Lodge, Marshal of Kemper-Macon Ware, and Sr. Warden of Concord Lodge. He was proud to be nominated by Troy Edward Van Winkle to serve as Master of Kemper-Macon Ware lodge for the 2021 Masonic year. He will also serve as Concord’s Marshal.
