Kemper-Macon Ware Lodge No. 64

Kemper Lodge No. 64 and Macon Ware Lodge No. 192 were consolidated effective December 31, 1997, and became Kemper-Macon Ware No. 64. Roger W. Peak served as Charter
Master.

Kemper Lodge No. 64


Kemper Lodge No. 64 was chartered December 3, 1896, by Most Worshipful Alfred R Courtney with John Henry Fisher, Worshipful Master, Merton Elbridge Church, Senior Warden, and Willis Leonard Gordon, Junior Warden. The Lodge was named for Most Worshipful Kosciusko Kemper, Grand Master of Masons in Virginia in 1906.

Kosciusko Kemper Kemper was born June 18, 1835, in Warrenton, Fauquier County, Virginia to William S. Kemper and Sarah R. (Humphreys) Kemper. Based on the 1850 U.S. Census, he was the second of four children.

 

On February 9, 1859, he married Ira Etta C. Garrett in Albemarle County, VA. They had seven children; two died early.

 

He was commissioned a First Lieutenant of the First Regiment, South Carolina Artillery by South Carolina Governor Francis Pickens when the Civil War began. Most of the officers and men were from the Charleston area. The unit was assigned to South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, then served in the forts and batteries around Charleston.

 

After the War, he moved to Alexandria, Virginia and opened a school for women, serving as its president for four years.

 

Next, Kemper studied law, was admitted to the Bar in 1874, and engaged in general practice. Kemper supported the City of Alexandria for many years. He was City Attorney for ten years and Mayor from 1874-1876 and 1877-1878. Kemper died January 26, 1910, in Washington, D.C. He is buried in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Cemetery (plot section 4, number 228) in Alexandria, Alexandria City, Virginia.

Masonic Record


He is first listed as a Master Mason in Alexandria-Washington Lodge No. 22 in 1875. He served as Worshipful Master in 1888 and 1889.

 

He was first appointed Grand Representative of Montana near the Grand Lodge of Virginia in 1891.

 

He served as a member of the Grand Lodge Standing Committee on Grand Officers in 1893. In 1894, he was appointed to the Grand Lodge Committee on Appeals. In 1896, he was appointed to the Grand Lodge Committee on Uniform Code of By-laws.

 

He was appointed District Deputy Grand Master of District 1 by Most Worshipful Mann Page on December 6, 1893.

 

In 1896, Kemper was appointed as member of a special committee to investigate the Knights Templar and Masonic Indemnity Company of Chicago to the Masons of Virginia.

 

He was elected as the Grand Master on February 14, 1906 and served until February 13, 1907.

Macon Ware Lodge No. 192


Macon Ware Lodge No. 192 was chartered on February 14, 1951 by Most Worshipful Enoch Dorron Flowers with Macon Ware, Worshipful Master; Joshua Arrington Shockley, Senior
Warden; and Reginald Brodie Turner, Junior Warden. The Lodge was named for Right Worshipful Dr. Macon Ware, a pharmacist in Falls Church.

Macon Ware was born in June 1890 at Ware’s Wharf in Essex County, Rappahannock District to E. M. and Alice Ware. 

 

The 1900 U.S. Census shows Macon Ware, age 9, as the second of six children born to E Macon Ware, Attorney, and Alice K. Ware, living in Central, Essex County, Virginia. 

 

He graduated from the University of Richmond in 1913. 

 

He moved to Falls Church on December 26, 1915. 

 

Macon Ware and T. C. Ware purchased Mankin Pharmacy in Falls Church and began business on Christmas 1916.

 

On June 1, 1918, he married Kathryn Milton Byrne in Falls Church, Virginia.
